Books I’d like to read this year

‘One Step Ahead’ - Rod McQueen

One from a few years back...combines approaches to rugby and business.

‘It’s not about the bike’ – Lance Armstrong
Recommended by Libby!

‘Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson’ - Mitch Albom
Been wanting to read this one for a while, further to the recommendations of many friends.

‘The Aussie Expat - The Luckiest Person on Earth’ - Steve Douglas
Talks about investment options for Aussie expats.

‘First Tests: Great Australian Cricketers and the Backyards That Made Them’ - Steve Cannane
This one doesn't come out until August, but wouldn't mind getting a copy for some light reading. Steve Cannane was a favourite journo when I used to listen to Triple J's hack, so hopefully it'll be replicated in the book.

‘First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong’ - James Hansen
A 2005 biography about some bloke who once walked on the moon.

Any other recommendations??

Simon Young gave me a book to read when he was up here last week. It's an autobiograhical account of the experiences of an NZ WW1 conscientious objector. I'm about half way through and am finding really good so you might like to try it too:

"We will not cease" by Archibald Baxter, reprinted by Cape Catley Ltd, Auckland, 2003.

Great suggestion! Sounds good. I reckon we should swap books – you’d like one I’m halfway through at the moment about an Aussie WW1 soldier’s experiences in the Somme, edited from his diaries written after the war. He wrote them in 1st person narrative - his family says it was a mechanism to help him deal with the hellish stuff he saw. So far read his experiences as a runner at Messines, Bullecourt and Passchendaele.

The language and terminology of the early century has been kept, so a interesting read in that respect – check out this review for more detail.

Anything I could recommend would be a bit light-weight for you! However, currently making my way through 'Luther's Pine' an autobiography by John Molony - a first cousin to your Nan. I'm using it as a tool in trying to piece together more of the patchwork of our family history and finding some worthwhile antidotal info in his book.
